December in Madrid is pure magic. Don’t get me wrong — the setting is beautiful, the lights are lovely, but the market itself is far from a charming artisanal Christmas wonderland. Luckily, Madrid has so many genuinely great things happening in December that you won’t miss it for a second. Here are the highlights you should be checking out.

1. Ice Rinks Around the City

Nothing says “Christmas in Madrid” like pretending you’re an Olympic figure skater for about three seconds before clinging desperately to the barrier. Each year, the city sets up several seasonal ice rinks, and a few stand out.

Plaza de Colón hosts one of the most popular rinks. It’s spacious, festive, and right in the heart of the city. It’s a great stop before heading up the posh Calle Serrano to see the christmas lights.

Another excellent option is the rink at Matadero Madrid, which fits perfectly into its industrial art-hub atmosphere. Matadero also tends to host workshops, performances, and family activities throughout the season, so you can easily make an afternoon of it.

And while the Palacio de Cibeles itself doesn’t have a rink every single year, this year it does! Even when the rink isn’t there, the area around Cibeles is beautifully decorated and packed with festive spirit.

Skating in Madrid is one of the best “feels like Christmas” activities you can do and it’s ideal whether you’re with kids, a date, or just embracing your inner Bambi-on-ice.

2. Madrid’s Christmas Lights (and the Naviluz Bus!)

Madrid does Christmas lights extremely well (they have to with other Spanish cities trying to claim their crown every year). Entire streets turn into glowing tunnels, the Gran Vía sparkles, Puerta del Sol radiates light from every direction, and neighbourhoods compete for the best displays.

You can absolutely enjoy them on foot, but if you want to level up your experience, book a seat on the Naviluz, Madrid’s official Christmas-light sightseeing bus. It departs from Plaza de Colón and takes you on a 45-minute panoramic ride through the city’s brightest and most iconic streets. Tickets sell out quickly every December, so it’s wise to book early. It’s fun, festive, and kitschy in exactly the right way.

3. The Carrera de Papá Noel – 21 December

This one is my personal favourite. Imagine thousands of people dressed as Santa Claus jogging through the streets of Madrid. It’s not a fever dream, it’s the Carrera de Papá Noel, taking place this year on 21 December.

This cheerful 5-km “race” (though let’s be honest, most people are strolling) is one of Madrid’s most joyful December traditions. Entry includes a Santa suit, kids get elf costumes, and the whole thing is a mix between a fun run, a family outing, and a giant red-and-white parade. Even if you don’t participate, it’s absolutely worth watching.

4. The City’s Best Belénes

Madrid takes its nativity scenes very seriously. Across the city, you’ll find historic, artistic, and monumental Belénes, each with its own style. Three of the best ones to visit are:

  • Real Casa de Correos (Puerta del Sol) – This is the region’s official Belén and often the most elaborate. Expect huge crowds, but also incredibly detailed scenes.

  • CentroCentro (Palacio de Cibeles) – Housed in one of Madrid’s most beautiful buildings, this Belén tends to be artistic and carefully curated, often mixing traditional elements with contemporary presentation.

  • Museo de Historia de Madrid – A lesser-known gem featuring a historic and beautifully preserved nativity scene. The museum itself is free and worth visiting anytime, but the Belén gives it extra charm in December.

5. Brilla Madrid Zoo (Getafe)

Rather than being a traditional zoo visit, it’s an illuminated walk-through experience featuring giant glowing animal figures, immersive light displays, and themed installations. It’s family-friendly, great for photos, and a perfect evening plan if you want something different from the central Madrid crowds.

6. Christmas Celebrations in San Lorenzo de El Escorial

If you’re in the mood for a festive day trip, San Lorenzo de El Escorial is your best bet in December. The town’s Christmas market fills its streets with stalls, music, hot chocolate, and seasonal gifts.

One of the highlights is its Monumental Belén, a giant open-air nativity that spreads throughout the historic centre. Full-sized figures, sets, and scenes are arranged around the town, turning the streets into a living Christmas story. Final Thoughts

Skip the Plaza Mayor market unless you’re specifically in the mood for a rubber-chicken-themed Christmas. Madrid has far better ways to celebrate December: glowing lights, nativity routes, festive races, illuminated zoos, snowy day trips, and more.
