What's On In Madrid - April 2025
Tío Tours breaks down a few of the exciting events happening in Madrid in April 2025.
The incessant rain has finally come to an end. Madrid has returned to it's normal perpetually sunny state just in time for April, and Tío Tours is going to tell you how to make the most of that new found sunshine. Strap in for these six April events in Madrid!
Semana Santa (Holy Week): April 11-20
Semana Santa in Madrid is one of the most atmospheric times to visit the city, with religious processions, cultural events, and traditional gastronomy filling the streets. In 2025, Holy Week will take place from April 11 to April 20, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the solemn yet vibrant celebrations.
Throughout the week, some of Madrid’s most historic processions take place, drawing thousands of spectators. On Palm Sunday, the Procession of Nuestro Padre Jesús del Amor, commonly known as "La Borriquita," marks the beginning of the celebrations with its symbolic representation of Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem. One of the most anticipated processions is on Good Friday, when the revered statue of Jesús de Medinaceli is carried through the city center, attracting long lines of devoted followers. Other notable processions include Jesús el Pobre on Holy Thursday and La Soledad on Holy Saturday, both of which create an atmosphere of devotion and tradition in the heart of Madrid.
In addition to the religious ceremonies, Semana Santa in Madrid is also a time for music and cultural events. The Auditorio Nacional de Música will host a special performance of Bach’s St. John Passion on April 10, featuring the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and the vocal ensemble Vox Luminis. This is a must-see event for classical music lovers, offering an unforgettable interpretation of one of the greatest sacred compositions.
No Semana Santa experience would be complete without indulging in Madrid’s seasonal delicacies. Torrijas, slices of bread soaked in milk, coated in egg, fried, and sweetened with honey or sugar, are a staple of the holiday and can be found in bakeries and cafés across the city.
Visitors should keep in mind that certain streets will be closed due to processions, so it’s best to plan routes in advance and use public transport where possible. April in Madrid typically offers mild spring weather, though evenings can still be chilly, so packing an extra layer is advisable. Whether you're drawn to the religious traditions, the cultural offerings, or simply the atmosphere, Semana Santa is a truly special time to be in Madrid.
